Before your session! Things to think about...
What to wear???
We want you to feel like you... This is a portrait of your life as it is now, BUT, of course, we want you to look your best too. Please wear clothing that doesn't clash, and doesn't have too many patterns on it. PLEASE AVOID BLACK IF POSSIBLE! Decide if you want your family to match, or not, but at least don't clash. Plaid is fun for farms, as long as the colours complement each other. Here are a few great examples!
Please make sure your animals are clean and brushed if possible. For horses, find your best halters, leather, or rope halters work nicely. A thin lead rope is best. For dogs, a collar that isn't too big is preferred, please no harnesses.
We will decide our arrival time with you in advance. Sometimes we stop by the day before to check locations and choose our backdrop, sometimes we come early in the morning. We set aside an entire day for each farm, this way we can choose our location and work around lighting, scheduling and weather issues. Usually, it is best to shoot in the shade or evening light. Cloudy days are great because we can work anytime... full sun is more challenging, so we will either find a shady spot or do the session later in the day when the light is softer.
Other things to consider...
Do you have any unique talents, hobbies or extras that you would like to include? Do you play the guitar or other instruments? Are you a firefighter, nurse, etc. Do your children play hockey? dance? do you want to include something special in your portrait like a family heirloom or memento? Do you want to hide something in your portrait for people to find later?
Would you like your portrait to be like a traditional family portrait, with everybody looking at the camera? Or would you rather do something different, where everybody is doing something, more like a snapshot of a moment in time? More candid (posed candid)? Here are a couple of examples.
